The Top Ten Secrets Highly Successful People Know That You May Not
Each newsletter will reveal another secret

Secret #5: Life is full of Paradox. Grow beyond them. Find the gift.

Life is not stagnant. Life IS change. Life IS growth. Life constantly evolves. This is the nature of life. And, I believe, this is the true nature of humans. Moving beyond the habitual thinking of right/wrong or good/bad will propel a person into a place of great opportunity. Many times, we are completely unaware that we are judging life or people this way. When we think in these terms, especially unconsciously, we not only put great limits on our thinking, but we create conflict, and stagnation to occur. Do you think this type of thinking will move you closer to success or further away from it?

How many times do we quickly judge a coworker, partner or child as wrong without even really listening to their perspective? How many opportunities do we miss to grow our understanding, show compassion, deepen our ability to communicate, or learn? How many times do we label a situation as bad without ever looking for the opportunities for our own growth in it? There are people who have healed from life threatening illnesses because they moved beyond illness and into possibility. They saw the opportunity to change their lives and their priorities rather than seeing the experience as “bad”. In order to strengthen our character, and move into the realm of infinite possibility, we must move beyond these labels. In this realm ALL is possible. All views are valid based on a person’s life experience and ALL experiences, relationships, and environments are present for our growth, happiness and evolution. How exciting!

My husband and I once went to a workshop called an Adventure in Intimacy run by Heidi and Yumi Scheffer. We learned that we all make assumptions. “Struggling marriages need to be fixed through therapy,” was a popular assumption. Someone in the relationship is wrong, and someone is right and the person who is wrong needs to be fixed. What we learned is that MARRIAGE IS THE THERAPY. Through the experience of this relationship called marriage, we are given the opportunity to grow as individuals in an unlimited amount of ways. And that without this experience and this exact partner, this growth would not be able to happen. Moving beyond right/wrong thinking allowed us to think in terms of growth, gratefulness, personal responsibility, and opportunity. We learned that, “Conflict is a friend”. Conflict is growth waiting to happen. What a more expansive viewpoint than right/wrong thinking! What opportunities exist for you, right now, that you are labeling as bad? Maybe Life IS the therapy, too!

These same principles and attitudes apply in the business world. In their latest book, Presence, Professor Peter Senge and his co-authors state, “When people in leadership positions begin to serve a vision infused with a larger purpose, their work shifts naturally from producing results to encouraging the growth of people who produce results.” Does your vision include inspiring, enabling and supporting the collective growth of your community? What is your real vision for life? Is it to constantly grow and evolve, or to remain stagnant and unaware of the patterns of thinking that keep you limited in scope and possibility?

A person can only go as high as their highest thought or ideal allows. Great success comes to those who instead of asking for a difficult situation to go away, ask for the courage, and awareness to move beyond it. In so doing, new possibilities and opportunities open up, growth occurs, personal power increases, character strengthens, and opportunities previously unseen or out of reach now become a possibility. Success does not come as readily to those limited in their thinking. It comes to those who constantly grow, evolve, stay fresh, see the glass half full, and who hold the same vision and possibility for others.

Monthly Challenge

Take Action: Become aware of how many people and situations you label. See someone as “right” who you have previously seen as “wrong”. What happens? Play with this. Become fully, 100% responsible for the condition of all experiences.

Question:
Choose a situation with which you are struggling. What is the gift, opportunity or learning waiting to emerge? How will moving into the field beyond labels expand your capacity for success?

Strengthen Your Team:  Concentrate on the growth opportunities and possibilities that exist in any given situation or relationship rather than labeling an experience as good/ bad or right/ wrong. Ask your group, "In what ways can we grow as individuals and as a team from this experience?"
