The Top Ten Secrets Highly Successful People Know That You May Not
Each newsletter will reveal another secret

Secret #4:  Be the Master of Your Own Destiny

I wanted to start the year off with this very important message.  This year, will you make the choice to be the creator of your own destiny? You are creating your destiny in every moment by the choices you are making now. Read on for three important practices that every master embraces.

 Reflection

(“All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.” Blaise Pascal)

In order to be the creator of your destiny, one must consciously choose what they want and who they will be as they do what they do. The only way to do this is to make reflection a part of your routine. Successful people take time to determine where they are going, what is working and not working, and if their priorities are in order on a regular basis. Too many of us live like a jellyfish being pushed around by the waves of life. As for me, I use a journal to keep myself focused on my goals, dreams, fears, inner obstacles, and accomplishments. Journaling clears the clutter from one’s mind just as emptying a trash can clears your home of garbage. Examples of questions to reflect on for the New Year include:

  • What is your vision for 2006? If the best things in life were to happen to you, what would they be?
  • By what means will you grow, deepen and renew those relationships most important to you??
  • Who do you want to be this year as you do what you do? (patient, present, loving, accepting)
  • What do you need to incorporate into your life this year that will bring you greater enjoyment, energy, health, and connection? What/Who do you need to let go of?

FACE EVERYTHING!

(The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it’s the same problem you had last year.” John Foster Dulles)

What obstacles stand in the way of you being truly happy in every aspect of your life? Are you experiencing the same financial problems, marital intimacy issues, parent child conflicts, communication difficulties, addictions to food, alcohol, shopping or career stagnation that have been laying in your life year after year? Get your head out of the sand. These issues will not disappear until you deal with them! Go seek counseling, get a coach, consult a friend, or go deep within and ask yourself.  Ask a trusted friend or partner what they see about you that needs adjustment. Then, rather than getting defensive, LISTEN openly to what is said. As long as these issues control you; you are not the master. What is possible for you once these obstacles are cleared? How will your life be better? What is on the other side of these situations for you?

BECOME!

(“There are no limitations to the self except those that you believe in.” Seth)

What do you want most in this world for yourself? Envision it. Imagine it. Feel what it would be like to have it. Then live, breathe and become the person in your vision. Act as if your dream has already come true. THIS is what brings dreams into your reality!  Go for it! There is nothing stopping you but your own beliefs about yourself!

Monthly Challenge

Take Action: Begin this year by strengthening your current foundation. Acknowledge your 2005 accomplishments and learnings. Then, envision or write what you want for 2006, personally, and professionally. Most importantly, who do you need to become in order to have these things? Reflect on your direction on a regular basis.

Question:
What obstacle or theme has shown up in your life over and over again which it is now time to address? (Difficult relationships, power struggles, communication blockages, standing up for yourself, etc)

Strengthen Your Team:  Have each team member ask another team member, “As an outside observer, what do you notice about the way I communicate that would benefit me to improve upon?"

Ask the Coach:

I struggle with my teenager. We cannot communicate. I do not understand her nor does she understand me. I’d like a better relationship with her. Any suggestions? CK

This can be a tough period in time, but it does not have to be. Answer this question very honestly. Are you REALLY trying to understand her, or are you pushing for her to understand you? Where are you coming from inside yourself? Is there something you fear? Are you attempting to meet your own need to control, convince, and be right or are you coming from a place of true desire to know and understand your daughter? Listen with your heart, and a pure desire to understand. Begin by having no agenda other than this.

Book of the Month:

This month I am recommending three books by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Oriah’s books are soft and poetic but do make a great point!

The Invitation
The Call: Discovering Why You are Here
The Dance

***If anyone is interested in a monthly book club using only books for propelling personal growth, please contact me. I’d like to meet once per month during lunch and use a coach approach as we discuss the books. We can meet on a telephone bridge line to make it easy for everyone to attend.

*** I am also available to do team meetings for your group based around a particular book. Using a coach approach, for book discussions, more effectively incorporates the material into the teams learning.
