Secret #7 Evolve with the Times

There is a surge of children being diagnosed with ADD related disorders. In my opinion, many of these children are right brain dominant and do not thrive in a left brained school system; however, they are not disordered. They are creative, wisdom filled, contextual thinkers who learn through experience rather than memorization. They are connectors and great communicators. Did you know that according to the latest research, IQ accounts for between 4-10% of career success? Are we overlooking the evolution of our world by labeling these children as disordered? Is there something to learn from these children? I think so! Having children who are right brain dominant has inspired me to learn as much as possible about this topic.

Recently, I came across a business book that everyone would benefit from reading. It is called “A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future” by Daniel Pink. Pink states that because of Abundance, Asia and Automation, the age of the left brained knowledge worker or as he calls them “L directed Thinkers” is coming to an end. Much of our Information Technology work is being outsourced to India so many of the high paid knowledge workers are finding themselves replaced by workers in other countries. With an abundance of similar products on the market, consumers are making their choices on which blender to buy, for example, based on the beauty and design of the product instead of functionality, so artists are in real demand. And of course, with so many of our systems being automated, the need for “real” people in certain jobs is lessoning. We are moving into a new age. The upcoming age requires a novel kind of thinker with a completely different skill set. According to Pink, there are five key aptitudes crucial to thriving in this new age…

  • Design (people are looking beyond the function of a product and seeking beauty, and emotional engagement. Original thinkers are in high demand)
  • Story (the ability to move beyond data to persuasion, compelling narrative, and communication),
  • Symphony (taking the parts and seeing the big picture),
  • Empathy (ability to understand others, to see through the eyes of the consumer)
  • Play (play incorporated into life and work, lightness)
  • Meaning (material plenty now allows us to seek purpose, transcendence and spiritual fulfillment).

Fortune 500 Companies are now looking for Masters of Fine Arts graduates rather than the previously desired MBA. What is the reason for this? We are moving into the age of inventors, designers, counselors, empathizers, artists, big picture thinkers, meaning makers and pattern recognizers. "We are moving from the Information Age into the Conceptual Age", Pink says. Those who are creative, original, and able to perceive through the eyes of others will be in the highest demand. Having coached CEO’s, Upper Management Leadership, and Business owners who are brilliant, and may experience difficulty retaining their people keeping a product / service funnel in place, perceiving through the eyes of their customer, or connecting to their family and coworkers has made me brutally aware of the need for a leap in awareness of what it takes to have a successful business, a high performing team, and happy family, as well.

It is the heart, emotions, and passion that give life to our businesses, our creations, and our relationships.

Think about this, too. We are manifesting from thought (idea) to actual creation in hyper speed so we need to be highly conscious of what we are creating and why. The ability to pause and reflect is critical.

Most of our children lack nothing materially. What they want is our time, patience, guidance and love. They need examples of parents who are living a passionate, rewarding, and meaningful life. They do not respond to authoritarian styles of communication but rather to collaborative styles.

There is very little privacy with security cameras, cell phones that take pictures and record, and the internet. Personal integrity is crucial in this transparent world.

Systems, whether business, health care, school, or political are becoming outdated and in need of rejuvenation and reorder. This presents enormous opportunity for those ready to take a stand and offer their gifts, experience, skills and talents to this realm.

People crave meaning, connection and passion in their work and life more than ever. They want a positive spirit in their workplaces. The meaning and passion they crave comes from opening to their heart, as well as, accessing, playing with, and implementing the creative side. Corporations are being forced to take a hard look at what it will take to retain employees, and be profitable in this upcoming age.

In essence, we are being called upon to become much more conscious, creative and present. All of this requires inner directed work. When I named my company Designs To Grow, my motive was to be a company that offers people the skills to grow more conscious, more aware and more connected and thus more successful, creative, healthy and prosperous in whatever way is meaningful to them. The coaching, training and consulting I offer is unique. Although, I myself am also on a journey to awaken to my fullest potential and purpose, I live and breathe what I teach. The inner experiences I have had might seem unbelievable to some, and yet, they have opened up a whole new paradigm for me. The world is evolving. We are at a pivotal point in history. For those that believe in reincarnation, I read something interesting. This lifetime is THE lifetime. It is the culmination and climax of all other lifetimes.
