The Top Ten Secrets Highly Successful People Know That You May Not
Each newsletter will reveal another secret

Secret #2:  The True Win-Win: Internal and External Harmony

Success means different things to different people. Many people define success by external circumstances. This may include but is not limited to achieving a certain position, having a lot of money, living a certain lifestyle, or being a good parent. Although, these circumstances may be part of a successful life, there is more.

Success is being happy. Yet, to be truly, authentically happy with no self deceptions means to be satisfied with who you are. Truly enjoying those things you want with no regrets, judgments or guilt; now that is success. Have you ever seen someone so driven to succeed that they do not have any sense of how the people around them are responding to them? Does a person who achieves a certain position attain genuine success if their marriage is falling apart, their children are unhappy, their health is unstable, their coworkers avoid them, or their bills are unpaid? What is this person’s internal state?

As the above quote states, “If there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character.”  True success, is being able to live with oneself, all of one’s choices, and all of one’s circumstances with dignity and integrity. Can you look at yourself in the mirror and feel deep self respect? In secret number one, it was stated, “Who you are being either repels opportunities or attracts them.”  Are you making daily choices that strengthen your character or weaken your character?  Is your internal and external state in harmony? If not, what is the cause of this?

What needs to happen in order for you to experience both internal and external success? In order to reach high levels of external success, one must continually develop themselves on a personal level. One must challenge themselves to face personal fears, get over worrying about what other people think, say what needs to be said, resolve what needs to be resolved and most importantly honor one’s own truth. Success will be more sustainable, your body will be healthier, opportunities will come effortlessly to you, creativity will flow and relationships will strengthen if you are clear on the inside. Your character will be strong. Your personal power will increase. If even one person in an organization is weak in character, the whole organization is weak in character. Just as strengthening your own character will bring harmony to the home, order in the nation and peace in the world, likewise, strengthening individual character will bring harmony to the team, and great success to both the organization and the individual.

Take Action: What in your life needs some attention? Make a list of the areas you are out of integrity with: work, family or self. What actions need to be taken to clear these up? What life skills need to be developed and strengthened? Do you need to REALLY listen, apologize, spend more time with, or communicate something to someone? What are you avoiding instead of facing?

Question: What daily choices will increase your self respect? What will strengthening your character in this way make possible for you? What is the cost of not taking these steps?

Strengthen Your Team:  After reading this article, go around the room and let each team member name one specific life skill they intend to strengthen. This will enable team members to support each other in their growth, and bring about deeper understanding and connection.

Ask the Coach:

I would like more visibility and recognition. Can you suggest ways in which I can be seen as more of a leader?  L.J.

Everyone wants to be recognized to some degree for their contributions.  How much time are you spending seeking to be recognized versus giving others sincere recognition? How much energy are you putting into getting noticed versus assisting someone else in their success? How much time per day do you spend acknowledging what you have done right, and what you have contributed versus what you perceive you have said or done wrong? We tend to spend 90% of our own inner energy beating ourselves up versus acknowledging all the ways we contributed to an individual, the team or the organization. Change your inner landscape by changing your thinking. Recognition will be a natural result of this.
